“I Loved Myself Enough to Walk Away”

These were the words from Jennifer Lopez’s mouth in her first interview after announcing her divorce from Marc Anthony. It came as quite a surprise because they seemed to have a very strong marriage. But it ultimately crumbled down. I don’t know the reasons for the divorce, therefore I don’t pretend to be the judge of her actions either. But all this hype with the divorce got me thinking about marriage.

Out of all people, Christians should most understand the sacredness of marriage. Not only because God established it so, but because these earthly marriages that take place every day between a man and a woman are a reflection of the marriage that will take place between Jesus and His bride (the Church). It’s a covenant that is supposed to last forever or until one of them dies [this is what the bride and groom promise each other during their wedding vows], but somehow, this bond, this promise can be broken. Divorces are getting more and more common, and they seem to me like an easy way out when you don’t want to make things work between two imperfect humans anymore.

Now think about the real marriage, the one humans try to mirror, the one between Jesus and the Church. It’s a marriage that will take place when Jesus comes back again for us. It’s not a marriage between two imperfect humans. It’s a marriage between one sinless, incarnate God and a redeemed, imperfect bride in process of sanctification.

When I think about Jennifer Lopez’s words, “I Loved myself enough to walk away”, all I can think about is: What would have happened if Jesus decided to say those words to us? We are, after all, a bride that fails Him over and over, a bride that can’t love Him the way He loves us, a bride that gets cold feet from time to time, a bride that even cheats on Him with other lovers. If we [as humans] were ever planning on marrying a bride like that, we probably would decide to not marry her after all because she doesn’t deserve our love.

BUT thank God that, even though He’s the only one who truly has a right to walk away from such a bride, HE DOESN’T! He doesn’t give up and walk away! On the contrary, every time we fail Him and sin against Him, He is gracious and forgiving, and He reminds us that there is nothing in this world [not even ourselves] that will break the covenant that He promised would last for all eternity.

A perfect God who had every right to boast on all His glory made Himself a servant, died on a cross and was scorned by those He came to save. He definitely put His pride and His self-love to a side because He wouldn’t walk away from the bride He loves.

When you feel like you are failing God, that you are being unfaithful, remember the love with which He loved you, remember the everlasting covenant He has made with you, and pray so that He helps you love Him the way He deserves. Thank Him for His unfailing love today!

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.      -Romans 8:38-39

“Me amo lo Suficiente como para Marcharme”

Estas fueron las palabras que dijo Jennifer López en su primera entrevista después de anunciar su divorcio de Marc Anthony. Llegó como una sorpresa, ya que parecían tener un matrimonio muy sólido. Pero al final, se derrumbó. No sé las razones del divorcio, por lo tanto, no pretendo ser juez de sus acciones tampoco. Pero todo esta conmoción con el divorcio me hizo pensar en el matrimonio.

De todas las personas, los cristianos son los que mejor deben entender lo sagrado del matrimonio. No sólo porque Dios lo estableció así, sino porque estos matrimonios terrenales que suceden cada día entre un hombre y una mujer son un reflejo de la unión que tendrá lugar entre Jesús y su esposa (la Iglesia). El matrimonio es un pacto que se supone debe durar para siempre o hasta que uno de los dos muera [esto es lo que los novios se prometen en sus votos matrimoniales], pero de alguna manera, este vínculo, esta promesa se puede romper. Los divorcios son cada vez más comunes, y me parece que son una especie de salida fácil cuando las cosas ya no funcionan entre dos seres humanos imperfectos.

Ahora piensa en el matrimonio verdadero, el que los seres humanos tratan de reflejar, el de Jesús y la Iglesia. Es un matrimonio que se llevará a cabo cuando Jesús vuelva de nuevo por nosotros. No es un matrimonio entre dos seres humanos imperfectos. Se trata de un matrimonio entre un Dios encarnado, sin pecado y una novia imperfecta y redimida en proceso de santificación.

Cuando pienso en las palabras de Jennifer López, “Me amo lo suficiente como para marcharme”, todo lo que puedo pensar es: ¿Qué hubiera pasado si Jesús hubiera decidido decirnos esas palabras a nosotros? Somos, después de todo, una novia que le falla una y otra vez, una novia que no puede amarlo como Él nos ama, una novia que se acobarda antes de la boda, una novia que incluso lo engaña con otros amantes . Si nosotros [los humanos] hubiéramos planeado casarnos con una novia así, es probable que hubiéramos decidido no casarnos con ella después de todo, porque ella no se merece nuestro amor.

PERO gracias a Dios que, a pesar de que Él es el único que realmente tiene el derecho de dejar a una novia así, El no lo hace! Él no se da por vencido y se marcha! Por el contrario, cada vez que le fallamos y pecamos contra Él, Él es misericordioso y perdonador, y Él nos recuerda que no hay nada en este mundo [ni siquiera nosotros mismos] que pueda romper el pacto que él había dicho durará por toda la eternidad.

Un Dios perfecto, que tenía todo el derecho de presumir de toda su gloria, se hizo siervo, murió en una cruz y fue despreciado por aquellos a quienes vino a salvar. Definitivamente El puso su orgullo y su amor propio a un lado porque no quería alejarse de la Novia a quien ama.

Cuando sientas que le estás fallando a Dios, que estás siéndole infiel, recuerda el amor con el que Él te amó, recuerda el pacto eterno Él ha hecho contigo, y ora para que Él te ayude a amarlo como Él se merece. Agradécele por su amor que nunca falla hoy!

Sé Intencional: Prepárate para servir

Me gusta la música. Me gusta. Soy el tipo de chica que hace casi todo mientras escucha música. Hay algo sobre la música que me transporta a otro mundo. Y, sin embargo, con todo mi amor por la música, nunca he aprendido a tocar un instrumento (y no estoy contando mis clases de flauta en el tercer grado). Ni siquiera sé si soy buena tocando instrumentos porque nunca he tratado de tocar uno. Nunca se me había ocurrido tocar un instrumento.

Sin embargo, últimamente es como si yo hubiera pasado de no sentir deseo de tocar un instrumento a desear aprender a tocar un instrumento: la guitarra.

Y admito que hay tres razones:

1. ESCRIBIR 

Sí, lo admití, un secreto que muchos no saben de mí. Me gusta escribir canciones. He escrito muchas, sólo que nunca se las enseño a nadie. Sin embargo, hay algunas canciones que siento realmente tienen potencial. El problema es que no son más que letras. He tratado de hacerles melodías, pero resulta en un desastre mayúsculo. Sé que sería mucho más fácil de hacer si yo supiera tocar un instrumento.

2. ADORACION

Me encanta cantar cuando tengo mi tiempo personal con el Señor, y muchas veces me he encontrado queriendo cantar junto a los acordes de una guitarra. Cada vez que escucho una canción específica, me gustaría saber cómo tocarla: la versión acústica de “Majesty of Heaven” de Chris Tomlin. Puedes escuchar la canción aquí.

3. SERVICIO

Esta es la razón más importante por la que quiero aprender a tocar la guitarra. Un par de semanas atrás, nuestro líder de célula dijo algo que caló en mí. Él estaba tocando el piano para empezar nuestro tiempo de adoración, y nos sorprendió porque no sabíamos que él sabía tocar el piano. Y él dijo esto: “Cuando yo era joven–me había convertido recientemente–yo sabía que Dios me había llamado para que le sirviera de alguna manera, pero yo no sabía en el momento en qué El quería que yo le sirviera. Así que decidí aprender a tocar la guitarra y el piano, por si Dios quería que yo sirviera en ese ministerio, yo estuviera preparado. “ 

Debo aclarar que mi líder de célula no sirve en el ministerio de adoración en nuestra iglesia, a pesar de que una vez lo hizo cuando era más joven. No creo que él aspira a convertirse en un líder de alabanza. Pero cada vez que haya un viaje misionero, una célula, un grupo de evangelización o cualquier otra actividad donde se necesite un poco de música, él está completamente calificado para servir tocando la guitarra. Y la mejor parte es que la guitarra es un instrumento que puede ser transportado fácilmente y no necesita electricidad.

La preparación, el adquirir conocimientos o aprender a hacer algo no garantiza jugar el papel central en un ministerio específico, y tampoco debe ser ésta la intención de nuestro corazón. Sin embargo, sí garantiza que estaremos preparados para servir cuando surja la oportunidad.

No sé exactamente dónde serviré al Señor en el futuro, pero quiero estar lista para servirle en la mayor cantidad de maneras posibles. Te animo a encontrar algo que te pueda ser útil en el servicio al Señor, algo que disfrutes hacer, algo que te gustaría saber hacer, y sé intencional! Empieza a aprender cómo hacerlo! Puedes tomar clases de fotografía, ir al Instituto Bíblico, aprender a manejar las consolas de audio, aprender un nuevo idioma, o ¿quién sabe? aprender a tocar un instrumento. No sabes lo que vas a estar haciendo dentro de algunos años, pero podrías servir a Dios con tus talentos y conocimientos en situaciones donde tus talentos sean necesarios. ¡Está preparado!

Be Intentional: Prepare to serve

I love music. I do. I’m the kind of girl that does just about everything while listening to music. There’s something about music that transports me to some other world. And yet, with all my love for music, I’ve never learnt to play any instrument (and I’m not counting the flute lessons I had in third grade). I don’t even know if I’m good at playing instruments because I’ve never tried to play any. Playing an instrument had never occurred to me.

Lately, though, it’s like I’ve gone from never feeling desire to play an instrument to wanting to learn to play an instrument: the guitar.

And I admit there are three reasons:

1. SONGWRITING

Yep, I admitted that, a secret most people don’t know about me. I like to write songs. I’ve written many, I just never show them to anyone. Nonetheless, there are a few songs from the batch that I feel truly have potential. The problem is that they are just lyrics. I’ve tried to make up melodies for the songs, but it’s a big fail. And I know it would be so much easier to do if I knew how to play an instrument.

2. WORSHIP

I love to sing when I have my personal time with the Lord, and many times I’ve found myself wanting to sing to the chords of a guitar. Every time I listen to a specific song, I really wish I knew how to play it: Chris Tomlin’s “Majesty of Heaven” (Acoustic version). You can listen to the song here.

3. SERVICE

This is the most important reason why I want to learn to play the guitar. A couple of weeks back, our small group leader said something that struck a chord. He was playing the piano to start our small group worship time, and we were surprised because we didn’t know that he knew how to play the piano. And he said this: “When I was young–I had recently become a Christian–I knew that God had called me to serve him in some way. But I didn’t know at the time where he wanted me to serve. So I decided to learn how to play the guitar and the piano, so that if God wanted me to serve in this ministry, I would be ready.”

I think I should clarify that my small group leader doesn’t serve in the worship ministry at our church, even though he once did when he was younger. I don’t think that he aspires to become a worship leader either. But whenever he’s on a missions trip, small group, evangelizing or any other activity where some music is needed, he’s completely qualified to serve by playing the guitar. And the best part is that the guitar is an instrument that can be easily carried anywhere and doesn’t need electricity.

Preparing, gaining knowledge or learning how to do something doesn’t guarantee center stage at a specific ministry, and that should not be the intention of our hearts either. But it does guarantee that we are ready to serve when the opportunity arises.

I don’t know where exactly the Lord will have me serve in the future, but I want to be ready to serve in as many possible ways as I can, whenever the opportunity arises. I encourage you to find something where you can be helpful in the service to the Lord, something you might enjoy doing, something you feel like you would want to know how to do, and be intentional! Start to learn how to do it! You could take photography lessons, go to Bible Institute, learn how to operate the audio consoles, learn a new language, or who knows? learn how to play an instrument. You don’t know what you’ll be doing years down the road, but you just might be able to serve God with your talents and knowledge in situations where those talents are required. Be ready!
